Academy Programme - Walnut Unlimited

Walnut Acacdemy programme.

Every year we take on a group of Academy executives looking to kick start their career in Market Research. Our Academy executives embark on a one year programme of learning and development. During the Academy year, the aim is to fast-track as much research experience as possible.

Content is flexible as Academy executives work on real projects from their first week, and we rarely know what the next exciting client project will be! You will work on a wide range of interesting projects, with our different sector and method experts. Your day-to-day tasks will cover all stages of the project cycle from planning, developing questionnaires, monitoring fieldwork, then analysing data and reporting this back to the client.

Your time on the Academy will see you begin in a support role, assisting our experts to deliver insight to a high standard, effectively and on time. You will be encouraged to take on responsibility from the start, and make your mark on the business. Most Academy Executives do a 1-2 months placement in Walnut’s Omnibus team, learning how to deliver fast-turnaround ‘pulse of the nation’ research on everything from product packaging to politics. You’ll also spend a few weeks with our marketing team, to get a well-rounded view of the business.

As a Academy executive, you will be coached and mentored during your first year and work towards the industry recognised Market Research Society’s (MRS) Advanced Certificate in Market and Social Research.

At the end of your year on the Walnut Academy, we will work with you to place you in one of our expert teams, where you will start to go deeper on your research journey building on the foundation knowledge developed in your first year. Don’t worry, you won’t lose the variety that the Academy brings; the contacts you make during your Academy year means you’ll still be able to work across teams where there is a need or you have a special interest.

Our next planned intake for the Academy scheme is September 2019, but in the meantime have you considered applying for our summer internship programme?. A number of our interns have gone on to join our Academy.

But don’t take our word for it; see what these previous Academy graduates have to say about their time on the programme by clicking on their photos.

The Academy has been a fantastic first step on my professional career path. Without the scheme, I would not have been able to work for such as wide range of clients from across different market sectors at such an early stage. As a result of working on various client accounts - including Vodafone, Trainline, Greater London Authority and Macmillan Cancer Support to name but a few - I now know where my particular interests within market research lie and have the relevant skillset to pursue them

I joined the Academy in May 2018 and I can honestly say it was the best decision I ever made. Being part of the Academy gave me the training in the fundamentals that I was not adept in and a refresher on elements I was already familiar with. Over the 8 months I worked with various teams and my confidence in myself and my skills have grown in leaps and bounds. The training offers you the opportunity to learn first-hand and allows you to put your theoretical knowledge into practice. The Academy programme offers you support when needed but also gives you the freedom to learn without any ‘hand-holding’, therefore helping you gain independence whilst increasing your technical skills. If you are looking to gain experience in market research, I cannot recommend this programme enough. You won’t just learn all-round new skills but will thrive in your development!

8 months on the Academy have flown by! It’s hard to describe ‘a typical day’ working in market research. I can tell you though that I never expected that I would be exposed to such a wide variety of work in such a short space of time. I have worked with the neuroscience, behavioural economics, quant, qual, tech, FMCG, retail, omnibus, ICM (social and governmental research) teams (and I’ve probably missed a few too!). I have felt supported, encouraged and welcomed every day that I have worked here. They say that people make a place, and the people really do make Walnut. The Academy has given me a great overview of the end to end research process, new methodologies, training and it has helped me keep an open mind before choosing my research niche. I’m so glad I applied for the Academy!

Joining the Academy has been one of the best decision I ever made. The scheme is brilliantly designed for you to experience every aspect of a market research agency. You’ll spend 8 months working with different research teams, each with their own speciality/niche. You also get to dabble in the back end of how a survey is scripted, analysed, and turned into data that the research teams can use to apply their “Human Understanding” to for client reports. The best part is that everyone at Walnut is always extremely supportive and ready to answer any questions you may have (and you’ll have a lot!). They will also always listen to your opinion and take it on board, no matter how junior you are - I’ve never felt intimidated, talked down to or not been taken seriously like you may experience in other grad schemes at other companies. I could not recommend the Academy enough if you’re looking to get into a career in market research!
